Week 1 Peer-Graded Assignment Answers :
1.
Please submit your
transportation analysis by copy-and-pasting the tracking
statement and annotating it in the following manner:
Calculate the distances and time between the locations mentioned on the
tracking statement.
Identify the role that each leg of the journey plays (e.g. pick-up, line
haul, delivery,
etc.).
Identify the mode of transportation that is likely used.
Explain the routing between origin and destination (e.g. how much of a
straight
line between origin and destination).
Analyze the efficiency of the routing (e.g. why the company likely chose
this
routing).
Ans.
1. Total distance from Windsor Locks, CT to King of Prussia, PA: 232 mi
or 373.36
Time between pick up and delivery: From Tue 09:01 PM to Fri 01:36 PM = 2
days,
4 hours, 35 minutes
2. Identify the role that each leg of the journey plays (e.g. pick-up,
line haul,
delivery, etc.). Pick up is when moment when order (usually a parcel)
gets picked
up to be sent to the customer (from point A to point B).
Line haul is the moment when the order is in transit, getting sent. We
want this
process to be as fast as possible.
Delivery is the moment when the order gets delivered to the customer.
Then the
orderi s marked as completed.
3. Mode of transport: Air shipment (express).
4. We want the routing to be simple and go from point A to point B. Make
sure
the system is updated in case of any delays.
5. Efficiency of routing: to make delivery more cost-efficient, orders
get sent from
CT to NJ, then to PA, arrived in each place and scanned before and after
the
journey. Haul companies make it more profitable by sending a mix of
parcels
through multiple sorting locations, nearing the delivery location.
Delivery would
be more time-efficient but less cost-efficient if we sent the parcel
straight from CT
to PA without the extra sorting facilities slowing us down. This is
always a
question of money vs time.
6. Areas of difficulty: We want to avoid order being stuck in transit
due to
sorting/scanning being slow or possible problems with the vehicle. Make
sure that
customer is reported of significant delays, affecting delivery time.
7. I learned to calculate the journey in terms of time (days, hours) and
distance
(miles, km). Describe pick-up delivery, line-haul transportation,
delivery, etc.
2.
Please provide the peer
reviewers with any areas where you had difficulty
completing the assignment. We will ask them to give you ideas on how to
overcome these challenges.
Ans.
I don't think this routing time is efficient enough.
How would you overcome this obstacle?
3.
Please provide an overall
analysis of the transportation tracking statement. What
did you learn and what surprised you?
Ans.
I learned that transport can easily help us deliver orders across
regional and
national borders, if necessary. I learnt to calculate distance and time
of
shipments; anticipate obstacles and fix them/inform the customer about
them.
Week 2 Peer-Graded Assignment Answers :
Project Title * Lay out your own Warehouse
Q1. Please
upload the image file containing your warehouse design.
Upload File
Ans.
PDF Link to upload is given in Description please check!
TITLE An Upgraded Warehouse Layout Design
CAPTION
An Upgraded Warehouse Layout Design includes
inbound/outbound doc doors,
fast mover section, slow mover section, broken cases
section, conveyor belt,
sorting and packaging station, staging area and two
miscellaneous areas.
Q2. Please describe how your design is
different from the traditional example that I
showed you.
For each difference, please justify why you
think your design improves on the
traditional example.
Ans.
1.The inbound dock door and separated staging areas has
been added to the
design to overcome the bottleneck spots that hinder the
efficient movement of
products into and out of the warehouse.
2. The racks has been turned along the long side of the
building to improve space
utilization.
3. The space of case lot/fast movers has been improved
compared to other area
so the pickers now could find more products in their
most-time-spent area.
4. The conveyor belt system has been extended to the end of
each isle.
5. The miscellaneous area has been upgraded to two combined
area along the
side of the building and could be used as equipment storage
and maintenance,
and/or assembly, etc.
6. The staging area has been extend so that it now can
covered all dock doors.
7. The miscellaneous area along the building now can
connect each part of the
warehouse so there is no blind area that blocked by the
conveyor belt and could
not be access.
Q3. What did you learn completing this
assignment? What do you think you could
have done better?
Ans.
I have learned that each part of a warehouse is equally
important to warehouse
design and a good warehouse design should consider each
part carefully and
thoroughly. I could have done better if done more research
on conveyor belt
design because I think the belt is very important in the
warehouse work flow and
what I designed is not practical if not seeing how the belt
work in real life.
Week 2 – Inventory
Assesment :
1.
What is cycle stock?
Inventory that protects against risk
Inventory that should not fluctuate
Inventory that is never expected to be used
Inventory that goes up and down regularly
2. What is
safety stock? Select all answers below that apply.
Inventory maintained to buffer against uncertainties
Inventory maintained for normal sales
Inventory that is never expected to be used
3. Adding safety stock:
Increases overall inventory
Decreases overall inventory
4.
All things being equal, if
we have smaller more frequent replenishments, does average inventory increase
or decrease?
Increase
Decrease
Week 3 – Logistic Customer service :
1.
Why is lead time important?
Select all answers below that apply.
It is always the same.
Customers use it to plan their replenishments.
It is advertised to customers and represents a promise.
2.
What is fill rate?
It is the percentage of customer demand that is fulfilled from
inventory.
It is a measure of how full a warehouse is with inventory.
Week 4
Peer-Graded Assignment Answers :
Project Title
* Build a Logistics Network
Q1. Please
describe the product you are planning to sell and why did you pick it?
Ans.
The Product I
choose is excellent quality fabric rugs from the best textile company
in Florida.
Q2. Please
upload an image file (.jpg or .png) of the warehouse network you created.
Upload File
Ans.
Image Link to
upload is given in Description please check!
TITLE Sale
and Distribution of rugs
CAPTION
Ornamental products for offices
Q3. Please
describe your rationale why you picked the number of warehouses you
did.
Also, why did
you pick the locations? Please be specific about each one.
Ans.
I placed 4 warehouses
since it is the most optimal quantity to cover the entire
population
density of the country.
298 First
Avenue, Gouldsboro, PA 18424, USA - It is the closest to the two most
populous
states in the USA.
6050 Gateway
Court, Groveport 01-143125 - It is also the closest to the two most
populous
states in the USA, and reduces the PA burden.
172 Trade St.
Lexington, Kentucky, 40511 - It is the closest to Georgia, Illinois and
Florida.
700 Westport
Parkway Fort Worth, TX 76177 - It is the closest to Dallas and
Houston but
not that far from LA.
Q4. What is
the transit time to each customer? It would be best if you put the
information
in a table. What is the total transit time to all customers (add the
individual
transit times).
Ans.
From 298
First Avenue, Gouldsboro, PA 18424, USA To: NY is 0.1 day Boston 0.2
days From
6050 Gateway Court, Groveport OH 43125 to: Philadelphia,
Pennsylvani
is 0.3 days Washington, DC is 0.25 days 172 Trade St. Lexington,
Kentucky,
40511 to: Georgia is 0.3 days Illinois is 0.2 days Florida is noon 700
Westport
Parkway Fort Worth, TX 76177 to: LA is 1 day Dallas is 0.05 days
Houston is
0.25 days.
Q5. Please
justify why your logistics network is the best you can make it for now and
the
forseeable future. Be sure to talk about what the expectations of your
customers
will be; what the current economic environment looks like; and, where
you expect
interest rates and fuel prices to go in the future.
Ans.
I think that
this distribution of warehouses is very optimal because I placed 3
warehouses in
the area with the highest population density in the United States,
and one
specifically for the western area. In addition, I hope that my product is to
the liking of
the mayors since it is a product widely used ornamentally in the
municipalities.
Q6. Please
write a short memo about the following topics (ungraded):
What did you
find most surprising in this assignment?
What was the
most difficult part of this assignment?
Which part of
the assignment was the most fun?
Ans.
1. Being able
to put everything learned to the test.
2. Locate all
the municipalities.
3. Place at
our discretion the number of warehouses.
